Frequently Asked Questions
Does tempered glass weigh more than regular glass?
No. Tempering is a heat treatment that changes internal stress patterns for strength, not the composition of the glass, so density is essentially unchanged from standard float glass.
Why is borosilicate glass lighter?
Borosilicate glass, the type used in Pyrex-style cookware and lab glassware, has a meaningfully lower density than standard soda-lime float glass, around 139 pounds per cubic foot versus 156.
Does this account for the plastic layer in laminated glass?
Yes, approximately. The plastic interlayer is much lighter than glass but only a thin fraction of total thickness, so laminated glass density is treated as very close to standard float glass.
