Frequently Asked Questions

How is grout volume calculated?

The ratio of one tile's face area to the area it and its surrounding half-gaps occupy gives the fraction of the floor covered by tile versus grout lines. That grout fraction, multiplied by the total area and the gap depth, gives the grout volume.

Why does a smaller tile need more grout?

Smaller tiles mean more grout lines per square foot of floor, since there are more tile edges in the same area. A mosaic tile floor needs noticeably more grout than the same area covered in large format tiles.

What grout depth should I use?

Grout depth typically matches the tile thickness. A common tile thickness, and a reasonable default grout depth, is about a quarter inch, but check your specific tile's actual thickness for a precise figure.
