Frequently Asked Questions

How is brick count calculated?

Wall area is divided by the area one brick occupies including its mortar joint, brick length plus joint thickness, times brick height plus joint thickness. This accounts for the extra space each mortar joint adds around every brick.

What is a standard brick size?

A common US modular brick is about 8 inches long by 2.25 inches tall on its face, with a 0.375 inch, three-eighths inch, mortar joint, the defaults used here. Brick sizes vary by region and style, so check your specific brick dimensions.

Does this include openings for doors and windows?

No, this calculates bricks for the gross wall area only. Subtract the area of any door or window openings from the wall dimensions before entering them, or reduce the wall area input accordingly.
