Frequently Asked Questions
How many bricks does one bag of mortar lay?
It varies by bag size and brick or block size, but a common estimate for a standard 80 pound bag of mortar mix is roughly 30 to 40 standard modular bricks, or around 12 to 15 standard concrete blocks. Check your specific mortar product bag for its stated yield.
Why does yield vary so much between bricks and blocks?
Concrete blocks are much larger than bricks, so each one uses far more mortar per unit, resulting in a lower units-per-bag yield even though the bag size is the same.
Should I buy extra bags beyond the calculated amount?
Yes, it is common practice to round up and add a bag or two beyond the calculated minimum, since mortar mixing and spreading always has some waste, and running short mid-project is more costly than having a partial bag left over.
