Punch Force Calculator
Construction & Home ImprovementEstimate the force required to punch a round hole through sheet metal, based on material, thickness, and hole size.
Estimated Punch Force
Estimated force in pounds-force needed to shear through the material.
Estimated Punch Force (Tons)
2.21
The same force expressed in US tons, useful for comparing against press capacity.

Frequently Asked Questions
What shear strength does this calculator use?
45,000 psi for mild or carbon steel, 75,000 psi for stainless steel, and 30,000 psi for aluminum, using the common 6061-T6 structural alloy as a representative value. Aluminum shear strength varies far more by alloy and temper than steel does, from roughly 9,000 to 48,000 psi across common alloys, so treat the aluminum figure as a rough starting point rather than a precise value for your specific alloy.
How is punch force calculated?
The force needed equals the hole perimeter, pi times the diameter, times the material thickness, times the material shear strength. This gives the shear area times the stress needed to fail it.
Does this account for punch and die clearance?
No, this is a baseline force estimate assuming clean shearing. Real punching operations also depend on punch and die clearance, punch sharpness, and stripping force, which this calculator does not model.
