How is material removal rate calculated?
For milling, it is the width of cut times the depth of cut times the feed rate, giving the volume of material removed per minute.
Why does material removal rate matter?
It is a key metric for estimating machining time and for checking that a cut is not exceeding the machine, tool, or workpiece capability. A higher material removal rate generally means faster machining, but pushing it too high risks tool breakage or poor surface finish.
Does this work for turning operations too?
This version is set up for milling, using width and depth of cut. Turning uses a related but differently structured formula based on depth of cut, feed per revolution, and cutting speed.
