Frequently Asked Questions
How is spindle RPM calculated from surface speed?
RPM equals surface speed in feet per minute, times 3.8197, divided by the tool or workpiece diameter in inches. This constant comes from converting surface speed, feet times pi times diameter times RPM, into a direct RPM formula.
What surface speed should I use?
Recommended surface speed, in surface feet per minute, depends heavily on the material being cut and the tool material and coating. Check a speeds and feeds chart for your specific material and tool combination rather than guessing.
Does this apply to both lathe turning and milling?
Yes, the same surface-speed-to-RPM relationship applies to both operations. For milling, diameter refers to the cutting tool; for turning, it refers to the workpiece diameter at the cut.
