Frequently Asked Questions

How is true position calculated?

True position equals two times the square root of the sum of the squared X and Y deviations from the nominal, or true, location. This is the standard formula defined in the ASME Y14.5 geometric dimensioning and tolerancing standard.

Why is the result multiplied by two?

Position tolerance is specified as a diameter of an allowed tolerance zone, not a radius, so the calculated deviation is doubled to compare directly against the stated diameter tolerance.

What do X and Y deviation mean here?

They are the measured difference between the actual location of a feature, such as a hole center, and its nominal or intended location, along two perpendicular axes.
