Roof Pitch Calculator
Construction & Home ImprovementCalculate roof pitch as a percentage, an x-in-12 ratio, and an angle in degrees, from rise and run.
Pitch (x-in-12)
Roof pitch expressed as rise in inches per 12 inches of run.
Pitch (%)
50.0
Roof pitch expressed as a percentage grade.
Pitch (Angle)
26.57
Roof pitch expressed as an angle from horizontal.
Rafter Length
13.42
Sloped rafter length for the given rise and run, from the Pythagorean theorem.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does a 6-in-12 pitch mean?
It means the roof rises 6 inches vertically for every 12 inches, 1 foot, of horizontal run. A steeper roof has a higher first number; a 4-in-12 roof is fairly shallow, while a 12-in-12 roof is a 45-degree pitch.
How is pitch converted to degrees?
The angle equals the arctangent of rise divided by run. A 6-in-12 pitch, rise equal to half the run, works out to about 26.6 degrees.
How is rafter length calculated?
Rafter length is the hypotenuse of the rise-and-run right triangle, found with the Pythagorean theorem: the square root of rise squared plus run squared.
