What is a standard caulk cartridge size?
10.1 fluid ounces is the most common standard caulk tube size in the US, the default here. Larger sausage-style cartridges and bulk pails are also available for bigger jobs.
Why does the calculation divide by 1 minus the waste factor instead of multiplying?
Dividing by 1 minus the waste fraction scales the needed volume up so that after accounting for the expected waste percentage, the remaining usable sealant still covers the full gap, a more accurate way to size for waste than simply adding the percentage on top.
What gap depth should I use for a deep gap?
For gaps deeper than about 1/2 inch, it is standard practice to first insert a foam backer rod to control the depth, then only fill the remaining shallow depth with sealant, rather than filling the entire deep gap solid.
