Frequently Asked Questions

What snow densities does this calculator use?

Approximate published density figures in pounds per cubic foot: fresh snow 4, settled snow 15.6, wind-packed snow 23, wet or slushy snow 35, and ice 57. Real snow density varies with temperature and moisture content, so treat these as reasonable planning estimates, not precise measurements.

Why does roof pitch affect the total weight?

A steeper roof has more actual surface area covering the same building footprint, so the calculator divides the footprint area by the cosine of the pitch angle to get the sloped roof area before multiplying by the load per square foot.

Does this replace my local building code snow load requirement?

No. Building codes such as ASCE 7 in the United States specify a required ground or roof snow load for a given location based on historical weather data, independent of how much snow is currently on a roof. This calculator estimates the load from snow that is actually present; always design for the local code-required snow load, not just current conditions.
