Frequently Asked Questions

What is a vertical curve used for?

A vertical curve smoothly transitions a road, driveway, or grading design between two different slopes, or grades, so vehicles and drainage do not encounter an abrupt change in slope. The curve used in most road design is a simple parabola.

What do BVC and EVC mean?

BVC is the Beginning of Vertical Curve, where the curve starts from the initial grade line. EVC is the End of Vertical Curve, where the curve transitions onto the final grade line. Both are standard surveying and road design abbreviations.

Should the distance x be measured in feet or stations?

Enter the distance from the BVC in the same length unit as the curve length, feet in this calculator. Formal road design documents often give distances in stations of 100 feet, so convert a station value to feet before entering it here.
