Frequently Asked Questions

How is AMT calculated?

AMT Exemption (2026: $90,100 single / $140,200 MFJ) is subtracted from your AMTI, then phased out at 50 cents per dollar of AMTI above $500,000 (single) / $1,000,000 (MFJ). The remaining base is taxed at 26% up to $244,500, and 28% above that. You only owe AMT if this tentative amount exceeds your regular federal tax.

Why did the AMT phase-out change?

Under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA), the 2026 AMT exemption phase-out threshold was reset lower (from roughly $626,350/$1,252,700 under prior law to $500,000/$1,000,000) and the phase-out rate doubled from 25% to 50% -- meaning more high earners are pulled back into AMT starting in 2026 than under the previous rules.

Are these tax figures always current?

Tax rates, brackets, and thresholds are set by government authorities and typically change at least annually. This calculator is for estimation only -- always verify current figures with the relevant official tax authority before making financial decisions.
