Frequently Asked Questions
How is opportunity cost calculated here?
The money is compounded monthly at your annual return over the investment period, taxed on the gain, added back to the principal, then discounted for inflation (also compounded monthly) to give a real, spendable-value estimate.
Why compound monthly instead of yearly?
Compounding both the return and the inflation adjustment on the same monthly basis keeps the calculation internally consistent -- mixing a monthly rate with a yearly exponent (or vice versa) produces a dimensionally inconsistent result.
