Frequently Asked Questions

What is A Body Shape Index (ABSI)?

ABSI combines waist circumference, BMI, and height into a single number. Unlike BMI alone, ABSI captures whether your waist is disproportionately large for your body size, which research links to higher risk of mortality regardless of overall weight.

How is ABSI different from BMI?

BMI only accounts for weight and height, so two people with the same BMI can have very different waist sizes. ABSI factors in waist circumference too, so it can flag elevated abdominal-fat risk even in people with a normal BMI.

What counts as a healthy ABSI?

Interpreting a raw ABSI value on its own requires comparing it against age- and sex-matched population averages, since ABSI naturally varies with age and sex. Use your ABSI value alongside other measures like waist-to-height ratio, and discuss any concerns with a healthcare provider.

Is a lower ABSI always better?

Generally, a lower ABSI relative to your BMI indicates less centrally-distributed fat and is associated with lower health risk, but ABSI should be considered alongside other health markers, not in isolation.
