Frequently Asked Questions
What is a UK alcohol unit?
A UK alcohol unit is defined as 10ml or 8g of pure alcohol, a measure used in the UK to help people track and limit their drinking.
How is alcohol units calculated?
Units are calculated by multiplying the drink volume in milliliters by its ABV percentage, then dividing by 1000.
What is the UK weekly recommended limit?
UK guidelines recommend no more than 14 units of alcohol per week for both men and women, spread across three or more days.
How is this different from a US standard drink?
A UK unit (10ml pure alcohol) is a smaller measure than a US standard drink (about 14g, or roughly 17.7ml pure alcohol), so the same beverage will show a different number of units versus standard drinks.
