What GCS score indicates severe impairment?
A total score of 3 to 8 is generally classified as severe, 9 to 12 as moderate, and 13 to 15 as mild. A score of 8 or below is often used clinically as a threshold for considering airway protection.
Can the GCS be used on all patients?
The standard adult GCS may need modification for young children who cannot yet speak or follow commands reliably, in which case a pediatric-adapted version is typically used instead.
