The HAS-BLED score estimates the risk of major bleeding in patients being considered for or already on anticoagulation therapy, most often for atrial fibrillation.
Does a high HAS-BLED score mean anticoagulation should be avoided?
Not necessarily. A high score is meant to flag modifiable risk factors for closer monitoring and management, not to automatically rule out anticoagulation when it is otherwise indicated.
How is HAS-BLED typically used alongside CHA2DS2-VASc?
The two scores are often considered together: CHA2DS2-VASc estimates stroke risk (favoring anticoagulation), while HAS-BLED estimates bleeding risk (a caution against it), and clinical judgment weighs both.
