What is the Schwartz formula used for?
The updated Schwartz formula is the standard bedside method for estimating kidney function (GFR) in children aged 1 to 18, using just height and serum creatinine.
Why is a different formula needed for children than adults?
Muscle mass, and therefore creatinine production, changes substantially as children grow, so adult GFR formulas are not accurate for pediatric patients. The Schwartz formula instead uses height as a practical proxy for muscle mass and body size.
What GFR indicates kidney failure in children?
A GFR below 15 mL/min/1.73m2 is generally considered to be in the kidney failure range, using the same staging framework applied in adults, though clinical management decisions in children involve many additional factors.
