Why does test type affect timing?
Blood tests can detect hCG at lower concentrations than urine tests, since hCG appears in the bloodstream before it is filtered into urine. High-sensitivity urine tests can detect lower hCG levels than standard tests, so they can give reliable results a couple of days earlier.
What is DPO?
DPO stands for days past ovulation. Since implantation and hCG production begin a few days after ovulation, DPO is a more direct way to time a pregnancy test than counting from the start of your last period.
What if I do not know my exact ovulation day?
You can estimate ovulation using an ovulation calculator, basal body temperature tracking, or ovulation predictor kits. Without knowing DPO, testing on the day your period is due is a reasonable general guideline.
Can this calculator work for IVF pregnancies too?
Yes, for IVF you can substitute days since embryo transfer plus how old the embryo was at transfer as an approximation of days past ovulation.
