Frequently Asked Questions

Why is sodium only 40 percent of salt by weight?

Table salt is sodium chloride (NaCl). Sodium has an atomic weight of about 23, and chlorine about 35.5, so sodium makes up roughly 40 percent of the total weight of the compound, with chlorine making up the rest.

Why do nutrition labels sometimes list sodium and other times list salt?

Different countries have different labeling conventions. The United States typically lists sodium, while many European countries list total salt, so this conversion is useful for comparing products labeled differently.

Is this the same as the recommended daily sodium limit?

This calculator only converts between the two units. Common general guidelines recommend limiting sodium intake to around 2300mg per day, equivalent to about 5750mg (5.75g) of salt, though individual recommendations can vary.

Does this apply to all types of salt?

The 40 percent sodium-to-salt ratio applies to pure sodium chloride specifically. Some salt products include other minerals or anti-caking agents that can slightly change the effective sodium content per gram.
