Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the recommended limit different for men and women?

The American Heart Association recommendation is based on roughly equal shares of a persons total calorie budget, and since men have somewhat higher average calorie needs, their added sugar allowance is set slightly higher too.

What counts as added sugar?

Added sugar refers to sugars added during food processing or preparation, such as in sodas, candy, baked goods, and sweetened drinks, as opposed to naturally-occurring sugars found in whole fruit or plain dairy.

How many grams is one teaspoon of sugar?

One teaspoon of sugar is generally counted as about 4 grams, or roughly 16 calories.

Should children have any added sugar at all?

Health guidelines generally recommend that children under 2 years old have no added sugar at all, and that people over age 2 keep added sugar to no more than about 10 percent of total daily calories.
