Frequently Asked Questions

What are net carbs?

Net carbs are the carbohydrates that meaningfully affect blood sugar, calculated by subtracting fiber (which the body does not digest) and part of any sugar alcohols from total carbohydrates.

Why are sugar alcohols only subtracted by half?

Most sugar alcohols are only partially digested by the body, so only about half of their carbohydrate content is generally counted as absorbed. Exceptions like erythritol and xylitol are often excluded from net carbs entirely since they are barely absorbed at all.

Does this calculation work the same in every country?

No. In the UK and Australia, fiber is already subtracted from the total carbohydrate figure shown on nutrition labels, so you would skip the fiber subtraction step for products labeled in those countries.

Why do low-carb diets use net carbs instead of total carbs?

Net carbs are meant to better reflect the carbohydrate content that actually impacts blood sugar and ketosis, since fiber and unabsorbed sugar alcohols pass through the digestive system largely unchanged.
