Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between current yield and yield to maturity?

Current yield only considers the annual coupon relative to current price, while yield to maturity also accounts for any gain or loss if held to maturity and the time value of remaining payments, making it a more complete return measure.

Why does bond price move opposite to interest rates?

When market interest rates rise, existing bonds with lower fixed coupon rates become less attractive, pushing their market price down so the effective yield aligns closer to new market rates, and the reverse happens when rates fall.

What does it mean when a bond trades below its face value?

A bond trading below face value, called trading at a discount, often occurs when market interest rates have risen above the bond fixed coupon rate since it was issued, making the lower fixed payments less attractive at face value.
