How are polynomials added or subtracted?

Only like terms, terms with the same power of x, are combined. Add or subtract their coefficients directly while keeping each term's power of x unchanged.

Why does the sign matter so much for subtraction?

Subtracting a polynomial means subtracting every one of its terms, so each coefficient in the second polynomial effectively flips sign before combining. Forgetting to flip every term is one of the most common mistakes when subtracting polynomials by hand.

Why is this calculator limited to cubic (degree 3) polynomials?

A fixed set of input fields is needed for each coefficient, so the calculator is scoped to a degree that covers the large majority of practice problems. Higher-degree polynomials follow the exact same term-by-term process, just with more terms to combine.
