Frequently Asked Questions

What is cosine?

In a right triangle, cosine is the ratio of the length of the side adjacent to an angle to the length of the hypotenuse. On the unit circle, cosine equals the x-coordinate of the point at that angle.

What range does cosine output fall in?

Cosine always produces a value between -1 and 1, the same range as sine, since it also represents a coordinate on the unit circle.

How is cosine related to sine?

Cosine is sine shifted by 90 degrees: cos(angle) = sin(angle + 90deg). They trace the same wave shape, just offset from each other.
