Frequently Asked Questions
What is tangent?
In a right triangle, tangent is the ratio of the length of the side opposite an angle to the length of the side adjacent to it. It also equals sin(angle) divided by cos(angle).
Why is tangent undefined at some angles?
Tangent is undefined whenever cosine is zero (at 90 degrees, 270 degrees, and so on), since that would require dividing by zero.
Does tangent have the same range as sine and cosine?
No. Unlike sine and cosine, tangent can take on any real number value, from negative infinity to positive infinity, since the ratio is unbounded near its undefined points.
