Frequently Asked Questions
What is cotangent?
Cotangent is the reciprocal of tangent, cot(angle) = 1 / tan(angle), or equivalently cos(angle) / sin(angle).
When is cotangent undefined?
Cotangent is undefined whenever sine is zero (at 0 degrees, 180 degrees, and so on), since that would require dividing by zero.
How is cotangent different from tangent?
They are reciprocals of each other, so cotangent is large where tangent is small (close to zero) and vice versa, and their undefined points never overlap.
