What is a determinant?
The determinant is a single number computed from a square matrix that reveals key properties about it, such as whether the matrix can be inverted (a determinant of zero means it cannot) and how it scales area or volume.
How is a 3x3 determinant calculated?
Using cofactor expansion along the first row: multiply each entry by the determinant of the 2x2 matrix remaining after removing its row and column, alternating signs, then sum the three results.
What does a determinant of zero mean?
A zero determinant means the matrix is singular, it has no inverse, and its rows (or columns) are linearly dependent, effectively collapsing 3D space into a lower dimension.
