Frequently Asked Questions

How do you multiply a matrix by a scalar?

Multiply every single entry of the matrix by the scalar value. Unlike matrix-by-matrix multiplication, scalar multiplication is simple element-wise scaling.

What does scalar multiplication do geometrically?

It uniformly stretches or shrinks the transformation the matrix represents. A scalar greater than 1 stretches, between 0 and 1 shrinks, and a negative scalar also flips direction.

How does this affect the matrix's determinant?

For an n x n matrix scaled by k, the determinant scales by k^n. For this 2x2 case, scaling the matrix by k multiplies its determinant by k^2.
