What is a diamond problem?
A diamond problem is a puzzle laid out in a four-section diamond shape: the top holds a product, the bottom holds a sum, and the left and right hold the two numbers that produce both. Given any two of the four values, the other two can be found.
How is it used in factoring trinomials?
For a trinomial x^2+bx+c, the diamond problem with product c and sum b finds the two numbers used to split the middle term, a key step in factoring the trinomial into two binomials.
What if the two numbers are not whole numbers?
That is fine mathematically, the two numbers can be any real numbers that satisfy the product and sum, though diamond problems in algebra classes are usually chosen to have whole-number answers for easier practice.
