Frequently Asked Questions

What is the reverse FOIL method?

Reverse FOIL works backward from a trinomial like ax^2+bx+c to find the two binomials that multiply together to produce it, undoing the FOIL expansion process.

How does this calculator find the factors?

Rather than manually testing integer factor pairs, this calculator finds the two roots of the trinomial directly using the quadratic formula, then writes the trinomial as a(x - root 1)(x - root 2). This gives the correct factorization for any real-rooted trinomial, not just ones with neat integer factors.

What if the roots are not whole numbers?

That is completely normal, many trinomials do not factor into whole-number binomials. The factored form is still mathematically correct and will expand back to the original trinomial.
