Frequently Asked Questions
What does FOIL stand for?
FOIL stands for First, Outer, Inner, Last, describing the four pairs of terms multiplied together when expanding two binomials: the First terms of each, the Outer pair, the Inner pair, and the Last terms of each.
Why are the Outer and Inner products added together?
Both the Outer and Inner products end up multiplying an x term by a constant, so they are both x^1 terms. Like terms are combined by adding their coefficients, giving a single x coefficient in the final expanded expression.
How is this different from the reverse FOIL calculator?
This calculator expands two known binomials into a trinomial. The reverse FOIL calculator does the opposite: starting from a trinomial, it works backward to find the two binomials that produce it.
