What is the fundamental counting principle?
If you are making a sequence of independent choices, the total number of possible outcomes is the product of the number of options at each step. For example, choosing from 4 pizza places, 3 sizes, 12 toppings, and 4 sauces gives 4 x 3 x 12 x 4 = 576 total possible orders.
Why does this only work for independent choices?
The principle assumes the number of options at each step doesn't change based on earlier choices. If a later choice depends on an earlier one (for example, some toppings only available with certain sizes), simple multiplication no longer gives the correct count.
What if I only have 2 or 3 choices to combine, not 4?
Set the unused choice fields to 1, since multiplying by 1 doesn't change the result.
