What is Heron's formula?
Heron's formula finds a triangle's area from its three side lengths alone, with no need to know any angle or height directly. It uses the semiperimeter, half the perimeter, in the formula: area equals the square root of s times s minus a, times s minus b, times s minus c.
Why is this useful compared to the standard half-base-times-height formula?
Base-times-height needs you to know or calculate the triangle's height, which is not always convenient. Heron's formula works directly from the three side lengths, which are often the only measurements you actually have.
What happens if the three sides cannot form a real triangle?
If one side is longer than the sum of the other two, the triangle inequality is violated and no real triangle exists, the formula would produce the square root of a negative number, which is not a valid physical result.
