How is the hypotenuse calculated?
The Pythagorean theorem: the hypotenuse equals the square root of the sum of the squares of the two legs, c equals the square root of a squared plus b squared.
Does this work if I know the hypotenuse and one leg instead?
This version solves for the hypotenuse from two legs, the most common case. To find a missing leg from the hypotenuse and one leg, rearrange the same formula: leg equals the square root of hypotenuse squared minus the known leg squared.
Why does this only work for right triangles?
The Pythagorean theorem is specific to right triangles, where the relationship between the legs and hypotenuse comes directly from the 90 degree angle. A non-right triangle needs the law of cosines instead, which accounts for the actual angle between the sides.
