Frequently Asked Questions
What is the shoelace formula?
The shoelace formula finds a polygon's area directly from its vertex coordinates, entered in order around the shape, by cross-multiplying consecutive coordinate pairs and summing the results.
Why is this limited to 4 vertices?
Omni's original tool accepts up to 30 vertices. This version is scoped to a fixed 4-vertex quadrilateral, the smallest genuinely irregular polygon case, since this project's calculator engine does not support an arbitrary, variable-length list of vertex inputs.
Does the order of vertices matter?
Yes, vertices must be entered in order around the polygon's perimeter, either clockwise or counterclockwise, not in a random order, or the formula will not produce the correct area.
