What is order of magnitude?
Order of magnitude is the power of 10 closest to a number's size, giving a quick sense of scale. It is the exponent n when the number is written in scientific notation as b x 10^n, with b between 1 and 10.
Why is order of magnitude useful?
It lets very large or very small numbers be compared at a glance, for example Earth's mass (order of magnitude 24) versus a helium atom's mass (order of magnitude -27), without getting lost in the full digit count.
What does a negative order of magnitude mean?
A negative order of magnitude means the number is smaller than 1, for example 0.0025 has an order of magnitude of -3, since it equals 2.5 x 10^-3.
