Frequently Asked Questions
How is a ratio simplified?
Both numbers in the ratio are divided by their greatest common factor (GCF), the largest whole number that divides evenly into both, leaving the smallest possible whole numbers that represent the same relationship.
What if the ratio is already in its simplest form?
If A and B share no common factor other than 1 (they are coprime), the greatest common factor is 1 and the ratio stays exactly the same, for example 5:12 cannot be simplified further.
How is this different from the ratio of 3 numbers calculator?
This calculator handles a two-part ratio (A:B). The ratio of 3 numbers calculator extends the same simplification process to a three-part ratio (A:B:C), such as an ingredient recipe with three components.
