What are polar coordinates?
Polar coordinates describe a point by its distance from the origin (r) and the angle (theta) from the positive x-axis, instead of by horizontal and vertical distances (x, y).
Why is rectangular the same as Cartesian?
Rectangular coordinates and Cartesian coordinates are two names for the exact same system: locating a point using perpendicular x and y axes.
Why does this calculator use atan2 instead of a plain arctangent?
A plain arctan(y/x) cannot tell which quadrant the point is in and fails when x is 0. atan2(y,x) handles all four quadrants correctly and always returns an angle in the range (-180, 180].
