Triangulation Calculator
MathFind the location of an unknown point using two known observation points and their compass bearings to it.
Unknown Point: x
The x-coordinate of the unknown point, found from the intersection of the two bearing lines.
Unknown Point: y
4.3301
The y-coordinate of the unknown point, found by substituting x back into the bearing line from Point A.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is triangulation?
Triangulation finds the location of an unknown point by measuring the compass bearing (direction) to it from two known points whose own locations are already known, then finding where the two resulting sight lines cross.
How are compass bearings different from standard math angles?
Bearings are measured clockwise starting from North (0 degrees points North, 90 degrees points East), while standard math angles are measured counterclockwise starting from the positive x-axis. This calculator uses the bearing convention.
What are the two common uses of triangulation?
Intersection: finding an unknown landmark's position by observing it from two known locations. Resection: finding your own unknown position by observing two known landmarks. Both use the same underlying geometry, just with the roles of "known" and "unknown" swapped.
