Why does a sphere have the smallest surface-to-volume ratio?
Among all closed 3D shapes enclosing a given volume, the sphere has the least possible surface area, making it the most efficient shape for minimizing material or heat loss relative to what it contains.
How do I calculate sphere volume from diameter instead of radius?
Since diameter d = 2r, substituting gives volume = (1/6)*pi*d^3. This calculator takes radius directly, but you can halve a known diameter first.
What is the surface-to-volume ratio used for?
It compares how much surface area a sphere has relative to the space it encloses. Smaller spheres have a higher ratio (more surface relative to volume), which is why small objects cool or dissolve faster than large ones of the same shape.
