Frequently Asked Questions

What is FTP?

Functional Threshold Power is the highest power output you can sustain for approximately one hour — it's the standard benchmark cyclists use to set training zones and track fitness progress over time.

Why multiply by 95% instead of using the 20-minute power directly?

A 20-minute maximal effort is sustainable at a slightly higher power output than a true one-hour effort, so the 95% adjustment estimates your one-hour-sustainable power (true FTP) from the shorter, more practical test.

How often should I retest my FTP?

Many cyclists retest every 6-8 weeks during structured training blocks, since FTP changes as fitness improves — training zones based on an outdated FTP become less accurate over time.
