What is the K-factor?
The K-factor controls how much a single game result can change your rating — higher K-factors (like 32, common for newer/lower-rated players) cause bigger rating swings, while lower K-factors (often 10-16 for established high-rated players) produce more stable ratings.
How does expected score work?
Expected score is the probability you're predicted to win based on the rating gap — a much higher-rated opponent gives you a low expected score, so even a draw against them increases your rating, while losing to a much lower-rated opponent costs you significantly more rating points.
Why might my actual rating change differ slightly from this estimate?
Official rating systems (FIDE, USCF, Chess.com) sometimes use slightly different K-factor rules based on rating tier, age, or number of games played, which can cause small differences from this standard ELO calculation.
