What is a handicap differential?
A handicap differential measures how well you played a single round relative to the course's difficulty — your official handicap index is calculated from an average of your best several recent differentials, not a single round.
Why is slope rating used in the formula?
Slope rating (ranging 55-155, with 113 as the average course) measures relative difficulty for a bogey golfer compared to a scratch golfer — multiplying by 113 and dividing by your course's slope normalizes the differential across courses of varying difficulty.
How many rounds do I need to establish a handicap?
Most handicap systems (like the World Handicap System) require at least 3 rounds to establish an initial handicap index, using a more accurate rolling average of your best differentials from your most recent 20 rounds over time.
