Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Riegel formula?
The Riegel formula predicts race performance at a new distance based on a known result, using an exponent (1.06) that accounts for the natural slowdown in pace as race distance increases — it's one of the most widely used race prediction methods.
How accurate is this prediction?
It's reasonably accurate for runners with consistent training across both distances, but becomes less reliable for very large distance jumps (like 5K to marathon) or if you haven't specifically trained endurance for the longer distance.
Why does pace naturally slow at longer distances?
Sustaining a given pace becomes harder as duration increases due to glycogen depletion, fatigue accumulation, and pacing strategy — the Riegel formula's 1.06 exponent captures this typical, predictable slowdown pattern.
