Frequently Asked Questions

What is margin of error?

Margin of error is the range, in percentage points, within which the true population value is expected to fall around your survey result. A smaller margin means more precise results.

How does sample size affect margin of error?

Larger sample sizes reduce the margin of error, but with diminishing returns — quadrupling your sample size only cuts the margin of error in half, since it scales with the square root of sample size.

Why does this assume a 50/50 split?

This calculator uses the most conservative (largest) possible margin of error, which occurs when responses are split 50/50. If your actual results are more lopsided, the true margin of error would be slightly smaller.
