Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between independent and mutually exclusive events?

Independent events do not affect each other — one occurring has no bearing on the other (like two coin flips). Mutually exclusive events cannot happen at the same time (like rolling a 3 and a 5 on one die).

How do I calculate P(A and B)?

For independent events, multiply the individual probabilities: P(A) × P(B). Mutually exclusive events cannot both happen, so P(A and B) is always 0.

How do I calculate P(A or B)?

For independent events, add the probabilities and subtract the overlap: P(A) + P(B) − P(A and B). For mutually exclusive events, simply add the two probabilities since there is no overlap.
