Most drive time calculators only do one thing: divide distance by speed. This one does that too, but it also answers the two questions people actually search for next. If you know your route already, the Look Up a Real Route panel above finds the real driving distance between two addresses, using actual road data rather than a straight-line guess, and fills it straight into the calculator below. Once you have a distance and speed, the What Time Will You Arrive panel turns your total drive time into a real clock time: tell it when you are leaving and it works out your arrival time, or tell it when you need to arrive and it works out the latest time you can leave, including rolling over to the next day on a long trip.
The core calculation stays simple and transparent throughout: drive time is distance divided by average speed, plus any break time you plan to take. Fuel cost is distance divided by 100, multiplied by your car fuel consumption per 100 km, multiplied by the price per liter, and that cost splits evenly if you enter more than one passenger. Every part of this calculator is optional except the distance and speed; skip the address lookup and just type a number if you already know how far you are driving, and skip the arrival time panel entirely if you only need the total duration.
How Drive Time Is Calculated
Total drive time is your distance divided by your average speed, with any break time added on top: Drive Time = (Distance / Average Speed) + Break Time. Average speed matters more than top speed here, since it already accounts for the slower stretches, stop lights, and intersections that make up a real trip, not just the fastest you ever went.

Looking Up a Real Route
Guessing a trip distance from memory is often wrong by a wide margin. The Look Up a Real Route panel above takes two addresses and returns the actual driving distance along real roads, not a straight line between two points. It works best with a full street address; a bare landmark name occasionally matches an unrelated place that happens to share the name, so the tool always shows you the exact address it matched before you use the distance, and flags it clearly whenever that match was not an exact one.
This distance comes from real road-network data, but not live traffic conditions, so treat it as a solid baseline distance and typical-conditions time, not a live ETA. For that, use your phone's navigation app once you are actually on the road.
Finding Your Arrival Time or Departure Time
Once you have a distance and speed, the What Time Will You Arrive panel adds a real clock time on top of the total drive time. Choose I'm Leaving At and enter your departure date and time to get an estimated arrival, or choose I Need To Arrive By and enter your target arrival time to get the latest time you can leave. Both directions correctly roll over to the next day on a long enough trip, for example an overnight drive that departs in the evening and arrives after midnight.
What Affects Real-World Drive Time
The average speed you enter is the single biggest lever on the result, and real trips rarely hold one constant speed the whole way:
- Traffic and rush hour: city driving at peak times can cut your real average speed well below the posted limit.
- Road type: highway miles are typically covered much faster than the same distance on local roads through towns.
- Weather: rain, snow, and fog all reduce safe driving speed and can add real time to a trip.
- Mountain and winding roads: elevation change and tight curves lower average speed even when traffic is light.
- Rest stops: build your real planned break time into the Break Time field rather than leaving it at zero, since it is added directly to your total.

Does this calculator account for real-time traffic?
No. Both the average-speed calculation and the real route lookup use typical road conditions, not live traffic data. Treat the result as a solid planning baseline, and check a live navigation app for current conditions right before or during your trip.
How accurate is the real route distance lookup?
Very accurate for a full street address, matched exactly against real road data. It is less reliable for a bare landmark name alone, which can occasionally match an unrelated place that shares the name. The tool always shows the exact address it matched and flags any match that was not exact, so check it before trusting the distance.
What average speed should I use for a road trip?
A common approach is roughly 55 to 65 mph (90 to 105 km/h) for mostly highway driving, lower for routes with more city or town driving, and lower again for mountain, winding, or bad-weather roads. Using your average speed from a similar past trip is usually more accurate than the posted speed limit.
How much fuel will my trip cost?
Enter your car fuel consumption per 100 km and the local fuel price per liter. Total Fuel Cost divides your distance by 100, multiplies by your fuel consumption, then by the price, and Cost per Passenger splits that evenly if you enter more than one person sharing the trip.
Can I use this for my daily commute?
Yes. Enter your one-way commute distance and your typical average speed, factoring in the real traffic you usually experience, to get a regular drive time and fuel cost. The arrival-time panel also works for a commute: use it to check what time you need to leave to make a fixed start time.
What time do I need to leave for the airport?
Use the I Need To Arrive By mode in the What Time Will You Arrive panel. Enter the distance to the airport, your average speed, and the time you need to arrive, and it calculates the latest time you can leave. Build in extra buffer time on top for parking and security, since that is separate from the drive itself.
