Most MPG calculators only go one direction: you type in a fuel-economy number you already know, and the tool tells you how much a trip will cost. This one works three ways. If you know your car's miles per gallon, switch to the cost mode below to estimate how much fuel a trip will use and what it will cost at today's gas price. If you do not know your MPG, or you just filled up and want to check it, switch to the MPG mode instead: enter the distance you drove and the gallons it took to refill the tank, and the calculator works out your real-world fuel economy for that tank. If you are being reimbursed at a flat rate per mile, whether for work, a rental, or a tax deduction, the reimbursement mode skips fuel economy entirely and just multiplies distance by your rate.
In every mode, the numbers come from simple, transparent math, not a black-box formula. Fuel economy is distance divided by fuel used; cost is fuel used multiplied by the price per gallon. The calculator also shows your result in liters per 100 km, since a growing share of vehicles, and most of the rest of the world, reports economy that way, and a comparison table lets you see how a few miles per gallon, up or down, would have changed your trip cost. Every input accepts either US units or the metric equivalent, so the same calculator works whether you fill up in gallons or liters and drive in miles or kilometers.
How to Calculate Your Car's MPG
Your car's dashboard estimate is useful, but it is still an estimate. The only way to know your real MPG for a specific tank of gas is to measure it yourself, and it only takes one fill-up to do.
- Fill your tank completely and reset your trip odometer, or note the current reading.
- Drive normally until you are ready to fill up again, ideally at least 150 to 200 miles for an accurate reading.
- Fill the tank again and record exactly how many gallons it took.
- Enter the distance you drove and the gallons used into the MPG mode above to get your real-world fuel economy.
MPG vs. Liters per 100 km
Miles per gallon and liters per 100 km measure the same thing in opposite directions. A higher MPG is better, since it means more distance per unit of fuel; a lower L/100km is better, since it means less fuel per unit of distance. To convert between them, divide 235.2 by the number you have, in either direction. This calculator's Fuel Economy field does that conversion automatically when you toggle its unit.

What Affects Your Gas Mileage
The MPG printed on a car's window sticker is an EPA lab estimate. Real-world mileage almost always differs, sometimes by a lot, depending on how and where you actually drive:
- Driving style: hard acceleration and braking can cut fuel economy noticeably compared to smooth, steady driving.
- Speed: fuel economy generally drops above 50 to 60 mph as air resistance increases.
- Short trips: a cold engine is less efficient, so frequent short trips lower average MPG more than one long trip of the same total distance.
- Extra weight and drag: cargo, roof racks, and towing all increase the fuel needed to move the vehicle.
- Tire pressure: underinflated tires increase rolling resistance and reduce MPG.
- Weather: cold weather and heavy use of climate control both tend to reduce real-world fuel economy.

Mileage Reimbursement and Flat-Rate Costs
Not every mileage cost depends on fuel economy. Employers, some rental agreements, and the IRS all use a flat rate per mile instead, which covers gas plus wear, insurance, and depreciation in one number. The reimbursement mode above skips MPG and fuel price entirely: enter your distance and a rate per mile, and it multiplies the two directly.
- Work reimbursement: use the rate your employer specifies, often close to the IRS standard mileage rate.
- Tax deductions: self-employed drivers can deduct business miles at the IRS standard rate instead of tracking actual expenses.
- Rentals and leases: some agreements charge a flat per-mile rate once you exceed an included allowance.

What is the formula for calculating MPG?
Miles per gallon equals the distance you drove divided by the gallons of fuel it took: MPG = Distance divided by Fuel Used. For example, driving 300 miles on 10 gallons of gas works out to 30 MPG.
What is a good MPG for a car?
There is no single good number since it depends on vehicle size and type, but for context, the EPA reports that new model-year 2024 vehicles average about 27.2 mpg combined, an all-time high, while compact and hybrid cars often exceed 40 mpg, full-size trucks and SUVs are typically in the 18 to 25 mpg range, and most motorcycles fall between 40 and 70 mpg thanks to their much lower weight.
How do I convert MPG to liters per 100 km?
Divide 235.2 by your MPG figure to get liters per 100 km, and the same formula works in reverse: divide 235.2 by your L per 100 km figure to get MPG. This calculator's Fuel Economy field does this conversion automatically. Use the unit toggle next to the field to switch between the two.
What is a good fuel economy in liters per 100 km?
In L per 100 km, lower is better, the opposite of MPG. The EPA's 2024 new-vehicle average of 27.2 mpg works out to about 8.6 L per 100 km. Efficient compact and hybrid cars often fall between 4 and 6 L per 100 km, while larger trucks and SUVs are commonly in the 9 to 13 L per 100 km range.
How much fuel will I need for a road trip?
Divide your trip distance by your car's MPG. A 500 mile trip in a car that gets 28 mpg needs about 17.9 gallons. Enter your distance and MPG into the cost mode above and it calculates the exact fuel needed and total cost at your local gas price automatically.
Why is my real MPG lower than my car's advertised rating?
The advertised rating is an EPA lab estimate under controlled conditions. City driving, cold weather, aggressive acceleration, extra cargo weight, and underinflated tires can all lower real-world MPG below that rating, sometimes noticeably.
Does this calculator work for hybrid or electric vehicles?
For hybrids, yes. Any vehicle that burns gasoline can use the MPG mode to find its real fuel economy from a fill-up, or the cost mode to estimate a trip's fuel cost. Pure electric vehicles do not burn gasoline, so their efficiency is measured in MPGe or kWh per 100 miles instead, which this calculator does not compute.
How many miles does the average car travel per year?
According to the Federal Highway Administration's Highway Statistics 2024 report, the average passenger car in the US travels about 11,026 miles a year. If you know your own annual mileage, a dedicated miles-per-year calculator can turn it into an estimated yearly fuel cost.
What is the IRS standard mileage rate?
For 2026, the IRS business standard mileage rate is 72.5 cents per mile for driving from January 1 through June 30, then 76 cents per mile from July 1 through December 31, following a midyear increase.
